[Wedding] Alliee & Brandon – Rock Island Lake Club in Sparta, NJ

Brandon did not look entirely convinced when I asked him to lie down on the dock.

This is one of those sentences that probably makes perfect sense if you have ever worked with me, and maybe slightly less sense if you have not. But somewhere during portraits at Rock Island Lake Club, after Alliee and Brandon had already done all the normal things people expect during wedding portraits- standing, walking, laughing, looking lovingly at each other, behaving like fully functional adults – I asked them to lay down on the dock.

Brandon gave me a look.

Not a rude look. More like the look of a man briefly calculating how much trust he had already placed in his wedding photographer, and whether this was the moment that trust had gone too far. Before he could fully decide, Alliee gave him a look of her own. Hers was much clearer. It said something along the lines of, “You better do what Ben says.” And to Brandon’s credit, he did. The rest was history.

That photograph became one of my favorite images I’ve ever made at Rock Island. An aerial view of the two of them on the dock, surrounded by water, geometry, sunlight, and the kind of quiet symmetry you hope for but can’t always force. Most people looking at that image would never know the tiny negotiation that happened before it. They would not know about Brandon’s hesitation, Alliee’s silent authority, or the fact that the whole thing only worked because they trusted me enough to look slightly ridiculous for a minute.

That is one of the funny things about wedding photographs. The final image often looks effortless, but the memory attached to it is usually much messier and more human. Sometimes the story behind the photograph is the best part.

Alliee and Brandon’s wedding has stayed with me for a lot of reasons, but that moment on the dock probably explains the larger feeling of the day better than anything else. They were warm, gracious, trusting, and surrounded by people who clearly cared about them. There was a softness to the day, but not in a fragile way. More like everyone there understood the assignment. Show up. Be present. Celebrate them properly. Maybe cry a little. Maybe dance much harder than originally planned. Maybe follow questionable dock instructions from the photographer because the bride has made it clear that we are doing this now.

There were plenty of beautiful things at this wedding, of course. Rock Island has that lakefront ceremony space, the dock, the wooded corners, the stone and wood architecture, all the things people tend to notice first when they look through a gallery. Alliee and Brandon’s details leaned into this warm late-summer palette of burgundy, peach, orange, ivory, champagne, pampas grass, and those golden tones that make everything feel like it’s already halfway to fall. It photographed beautifully, but what I remember more than the flowers is how the colors seemed to fit the people. Nothing felt cold or overly polished. It felt generous. A little romantic. A little earthy. Very much alive.

Thank you

There are probably more exciting ways to spend an evening than reading a few thousand words about a wedding venue.

But since you're here anyway, and now know more about this venue than some of the people getting married there next weekend, I figure we should probably say hello.

If you're looking for a photographer, I'd love to hear what you're planning.
