The first thing I remember about Tess and Graham’s wedding isn’t either of them.
It’s Macky.
Not because he was actually there, but because he somehow managed to be everywhere. He showed up on the refrigerator while everyone was getting ready. On cocktail napkins. On the cake. Even an “I Love My Labradoodle” magnet made its way into the story. Every time I thought I’d seen the last little nod to him, another one appeared.
After photographing so many weddings, I’ve noticed there’s a difference between couples who try to personalize a wedding and couples whose personalities simply spill into it. Tess and Graham fell squarely into the second category. Macky wasn’t a gimmick or a theme. He’s part of their family, so naturally he became part of the wedding too.
The rest of the day felt effortlessly classic. A black-tie celebration at Maritime Parc with the Manhattan skyline in the background, a timeless ballgown, velvet dinner jacket, and just enough winter light to remind me why I never get tired of photographing this venue.
What stood out wasn’t how polished everything looked. It was how comfortable everyone seemed.
Nobody felt like they were performing. Family drifted in and out of rooms helping where they could. Friends laughed through the morning without worrying about the camera. Even during portraits, Tess and Graham settled into each other almost immediately. Those are my favorite couples to photograph. After a few minutes, they stop thinking about being photographed altogether.
That same feeling carried into the reception.
It started like a black-tie wedding and ended like nobody remembered they were wearing tuxedos. The live band kept the dance floor packed all night. Chairs ended up in the air. Tess eventually traded her gown for a sparkly reception dress and sneakers, which I’ve learned is usually a sign that the party has officially taken priority over appearances.
Then the evening delivered one final surprise.
Fireworks.
Not theirs.
Another couple at a neighboring venue had arranged a fireworks show, and nobody at Maritime Parc knew it was coming. Not the staff. Not me. Definitely not Tess and Graham.
For a few minutes, everyone wandered outside to watch. We stole a handful of portraits with fireworks exploding over the Manhattan skyline before heading right back to the dance floor.
If you looked through the gallery, you’d probably assume that moment had been planned for months.
It wasn’t.
Looking back, that’s probably what I remember most about Tess and Graham’s wedding. It was elegant without taking itself too seriously. Personal without trying too hard. And somehow, between a Labradoodle who wasn’t there and fireworks that weren’t theirs, it became one of those weddings that couldn’t have belonged to anyone else.
