When I was younger, both of my parents worked around the clock in order to provide a better life for me and my brother. Regardless of our family’s financial situation or how tired my parents undoubtedly were, Sundays were always a day reserved for family time. It didn’t matter if it was a fancy trip to the amusement park, or a short ride to a nearby park to feed the ducks/pigeons. Thirty years later, now as a grown man, I honestly don’t remember the times when my childhood home was reliably empty for 6 days out of the week; back when it was simply just me and my brother, alone to our own devices, finding creative ways to pass the time without wrecking our tiny Brooklyn apartment (which we did anyway). What I do remember however, are those Sundays when we could just be a “normal” family of four, doing what other families of four would do on the weekends: playing, laughing, spending quality time together. These are the moments that I cherish most.
Thirty years later, now as a grown man, I find myself in very familiar circumstances. The most noticeable difference is of course, at least my folks had the good sense to take off once a week. We hadn’t been as diligent about family time, especially during these past two years. But it was about time to remedy our situation; our kids deserve to have memories they can cherish for a lifetime too.
